If you, the professor, suspect a student of violating the University Honor Code, the following procedures shall apply:
1. You, the instructor, will submit an honor code violation form, using the form below.
2. Once the form is received the Office of Community Standards will check the student’s file to determine whether the student has been sanctioned previously for violating the University Honor Code and notify the instructor. A hold will be placed on the student's account until the case is resolved so that the class may not be droppedto avoid sanctions.
3. If it is a first time violation, the instructor will meet with the student to discuss the issue;
a. after/during this conference, if the student does accept responsibility, the instructor can adjudicate this case directly by completing the Resolution Form provided by the Office of Community Standards. Once the form is complete, submit the form to the Office of Community Standards and the case will be formally processed and letters will be sent to the student as well as pertinent academic offices.
b. if the student does not accept responsibility for the violation of the Honor Code, then the case will go directly to the University Honor Board. The instructor must complete the Resolution Form provided by the Office of Community Standards and that office will schedule the University Honor Board proceeding. Be sure to let the Office of Community Standards know if you want to attend the hearing and share your availability below. The grade for the class must remain Incomplete until the case is resolved, and students should be encourgaged to continue to attend/participate in the class meetings.
4. If this is not a first violation, the case may be referred to the University Honor Board. The grade for the class must remain Incomplete until the case is resolved by the Honor Board, and students should encourgaged to continue to attend/participate in the class meetings. The reporting faculty member will recieve an email from the Office of Community Standards with this information.
5. The case must be referred to the University Honor Board if the instructor believes that sanctions greater than failure in a course should be considered.
6. The student and faculty justices take these cases seriously and adjudicate justly. It is important that the Office of Community Standards be allowed to process these cases to safeguard our academic intregrity.
