Recognized pathways of engagement include the following:
-Direct Service: Giving personal time to address immediate community needs in collaboration with a community non-profit partner. Direct Service includes activities in which the student is having direct contact with community members that the organization supports. Ex: Tutoring at Carnegie Center
-Indirect Service: Giving personal time to help support efforts that address community need in collaboration with a community non-profit partner. Indirect Service includes activities that support the mission of the non-profit but do not necessarily include direct contact with community members the organization supports. Ex: Helping to sort food at God’s Pantry
Community Engaged Research: Enriching knowledge of and informing action on critical social issues by connecting coursework and research to community-identified concerns. Ex: Working with Habitat to research the history of housing policies in the city
Activism/Advocacy: The process of involving, educating, and mobilizing individual or collective action to influence people or systems that address community need. Ex: Organizing a workshop on the effects of local farming on the health of the city
Philanthropy: The voluntary redistribution of resources by individuals and institutions. Ex: Gathering infant clothing for The Nest, Organizing a fundraiser in support of Big Brother’s Big Sisters
